Perm Curls vs Hot Iron Curls

Occasionally there are misconceptions about perms. People will see a picture of hair that has been curled with a curling iron and think that a perm will allow them to have that same look. When in reality, a perm typically gives a look that most resembles naturally curly hair. In order to get loose beach waves, you most likely are going to have to use a curling iron or flat iron to achieve that look.

Here are examples of hair that resembles either naturally curly hair or hair that has been permed. Notice how naturally curly hair or permed hair often has the same tightness of curl from root to end.

Here are examples of hair that has most likely been curled using a hot iron such as a curling iron or flat iron.

Medium Length Haircuts

Remember the time you cut your hair short, then tried growing it out while trying to get through that awkward mid-length? Well that mid-length hair is one of the most popular styles right now! Whether it hits right at your shoulders or just below, these are some of the top haircuts we are currently doing here at Aspen Salon. Most often, client's also choose to opt out of bangs and have been keeping their hair long in the front, either with no layers at all or subtle longer layers throughout.

REDS

We are talking about REDS today! We've heard clients before say that they don't look good with red hair. Although they could have a preference of not liking the color red over other hair colors for example, they also might not be choosing the right tone of red for their hair. Try looking at your skin under your wrist. If your skin has pink or yellow tones, your skin will usually look best with warmer tones. If you see more green or blue colors in your skin, you probably would want to stick to more cooler tones. Determining the underlining pigment of your skin can make a huge difference when choosing the right color for your hair. Here are some examples with tones of reds:

Warm Red Tones: Including coppers, warm blondes, and copper-reds.

Cool Reds: Including reds with a blue or purple base.

Flat Iron Curling Tutorial

We love flat iron curling because of the wave-like curls it makes, how long they last because of the tension between the two flat iron plates, and how you can adjust the heat depending on how loose or tight you want the curls. Here is our tutorial:

Before:

  1. Start with about a 1 inch section towards the front of the head. You can either section the hair off, or just grab sections randomly around the head like we prefer to give it a more uneven natural look.

2. While holding the section in your non-dominant hand, hold the flat iron in your dominant hand and clamp the flat iron towards the root of the section while facing the flat iron pointing down. It works so much better having the flat iron facing down then upward.

 3. Twist the flat iron towards the back of the head one turn. (It is harder to pull the flat iron through the section of hair if you turn the flat iron more than once.)

4. Then pull down at an angle allowing the hair to pull completely through the flat iron.

5. Complete the rest of the hair. Curl both sides of the hair with the curls directed toward the back of the head. Don't worry too much about what each individual curl looks like.

Once the hair is all completely curled, run your fingers through the hair to break up the curls. If you see any curls that need to be fixed, now is the time to fix them now that you can see how all the curls work together.

* Note.. This is how we have found flat iron curls work best. Try tweaking different steps yourself to find which works best for you! Examples: maybe try alternating the curls by directing them towards the front and back of the head instead of just towards the back. Also you can adjust the heat depending on the size of curl you desire (the higher the temperature of the flat iron, the tighter the curl. The lower temperature of the flat iron, the looser the curl.)

Face Shapes

Have you ever loved a hairstyle but have wondered if it would work with your face shape? Well wonder no more! We found some helpful inspiration tools to guide you towards your ideal hairstyle specifically for your face shape!

First, it is important to understand your face shape and can sometimes be hard to figure out. Start by first pulling your hair entirely back so you can see all angles of your face. Point out the 4 "corners" of your face starting with the top right and left corner, then the bottom left and right corner. Comparing all 4 corners, look for which ones are more rounded, more square, or which ones angle out or round in. Compare the chart below with your face shape to help guide you as well.

Now that you have determined the shape of your face, use this tool below to help guide you towards hairstyles that would suite your face shape best! If you are still having a hard time trying to decide which style you want, make an appointment with one of our professional stylists and we will help you!

BANGS.

Knowing different types of bangs ahead of time will give you a better understanding on what you're looking for before your visit to Aspen Salon! Giving bangs a blunt look is more dramatic and sharp, verses texturizing bangs will help soften features on your face. Pictures are always very helpful to show your stylist what exactly you're looking for as well.
